
In the first five months of this year, 4,678 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 14.2% or 774 fewer than in the same period of 2024, according to provisional data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.
Of these, 2,422 were boys – 8.8% or 230 fewer than in the same period last year – and 2,256 were girls, representing a 19.4% decrease or 544 fewer girls.
In May, 946 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 15.5% or 174 fewer than in May 2024. This includes 482 boys and 464 girls.
Thus, according to the evaluation method introduced in 2025, Latvia has now recorded fewer than 1,000 newborns per month for the seventh consecutive month.
In November 2024, 959 newborns were registered; in December – 933; in January 2025 – 881; in February – 890; in March – 985; and in April – 976.
In the first five months of this year, 11,096 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 5% or 584 fewer than in the same period in 2024, when 11,680 deaths were recorded.
As a result, in the first five months of this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 6,418. In the corresponding period last year, deaths exceeded births by 6,228.
In the first five months of 2025, 3,005 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 26.9% or 637 more than in the same period of 2024.
As of the 1st of June this year, the provisional population of Latvia was 1.832 million.
