On Thursday, NATO fighter jets intercepted five Russian military aircraft flying close to NATO airspace without complying with international flight safety regulations, NATO Allied Air Command reported.
In a statement on Facebook, the command explained that three MiG-31s, along with one Su-30 and one Su-35, were identified west of Latvia’s coast before being escorted.
The NATO jets took off from Šiauliai, Lithuania, and safely returned to base after the escort mission.
Latvian Defence Minister Andris Sprūds (P) told Latvian Radio that
the interception of Russian fighters shows NATO acted with increased vigilance
and will continue to respond even more actively.,
He reminded that the approach of Russian military aircraft to NATO airspace, or violations of it, has been a recurring reality.
“We know exactly where we are geopolitically. We are located next to an aggressor state. Right now, we see this reality more visibly,” Sprūds emphasized.
