Although nighttime temperatures in many areas will still drop to around 0°C, daytime temperatures across the entire country are expected to remain above freezing, causing snow to melt, according to the Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
In the coming days, precipitation will be light, and as air temperatures fluctuate, so will the type of precipitation. Winds will be light to moderate. Skies will be mostly cloudy, and fog will thicken in some areas.
On Friday, the 27th of February, skies will be mostly cloudy, with rain expected at times in many areas, while the southern part of the country will see less precipitation.
Fog may form locally in the evening, reducing visibility. A light to moderate southerly to southwesterly wind will blow, with coastal gusts reaching up to 15 m/s. At night, temperatures in most of the country will fall to 0…-3°C, while in Kurzeme they will range between 0…+2°C. During the day, temperatures will rise above zero everywhere, reaching +1…+5°C.
If some sunshine breaks through the clouds on Saturday, on Sunday clouds will cover most of the sky.
Rain is expected in some areas, and winds will remain light. Fog will form in many places on Saturday and in some areas on Sunday, potentially affecting road visibility. Air temperatures will range between 0…+6°C both at night and during the day.
At the beginning of next week, weather conditions will be influenced by an anticyclone, bringing mainly dry weather and light winds. Only on Tuesday will a precipitation zone cross eastern Latvia, bringing rain and sleet. In the second half of the week, no significant precipitation is forecast, and sunshine will appear more frequently. Nighttime temperatures will fall several degrees below 0°C, while daytime temperatures will again rise above freezing.
Positive temperatures will reduce snow cover thickness. Initially, snow will melt in coastal areas and then gradually decrease more rapidly from the west. Currently, the thickest snow cover is in the eastern part of the country, in some places exceeding half a metre — and there the snow will persist the longest.
