On Friday, prolonged and heavy snowfall is expected across the entire country, with the snow cover increasing by 10–14 cm in many areas. As a result, an orange-level warning has been issued nationwide, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
In the southern part of the country, more than 15 cm of fresh snow may accumulate. In southeastern Latvia, there is also a risk of black ice. Northeasterly and easterly winds will continue to strengthen, with gusts reaching 15–19 m/s. Air temperatures are expected to range between –4°C and –9°C, while in Latgale it will be slightly warmer, at –1°C to –4°C.
On Saturday night, snowfall will continue in many areas, although its intensity will decrease. The snow cover will increase by an additional 1–4 cm, and in some places by 5–6 cm. Winds in Kurzeme and Vidzeme will remain gusty, causing blowing snow. During the day, only light snowfall is expected in isolated areas, and the wind will gradually weaken. Air temperatures will range from –8°C to –12°C at night and –6°C to –11°C during the day.
On Sunday, weather conditions will become calmer – the wind will subside, and only a few snowflakes may fall in some places during the night. Frost will intensify again, with temperatures dropping to –17°C to –22°C across most of the country, and under clear skies in some areas down to –26°C. Daytime temperatures will remain similar to previous days.
There is a high probability that wintry conditions will persist throughout Latvia next week as well. On some nights, temperatures may once again fall below –20°C, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre indicates.
