On Wednesday, light snowfall is expected across most of the country, and during the day the snow cover will increase by a few centimeters, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
The influence of the anticyclone will decrease and cloud cover will increase, although light winds will continue to prevail. During the night into Wednesday, minimum air temperatures in many areas are expected to range between -13°C and -18°C. In some eastern and central regions, as skies clear, severe frost is also possible, with temperatures dropping to -20°C to -22°C. During the day, the thermometer will rise to between -4°C and -9°C.
On Thursday, warmer air will move in from the south, bringing a brief thaw to parts of southeastern Latvia in the second half of the week.
Air temperatures on both Thursday and Friday will fluctuate in this region, while frost will persist across the rest of the country. As the influence of a cyclone strengthens, precipitation-rich weather is expected across most of the territory.
Snow will be the dominant form of precipitation,
and by the end of the week the snow cover—mainly in the southern part of the country—may increase by up to 10 centimeters, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre reports.
However, in regions where temperatures approach positive values, wet snow is also expected. There is a higher probability of black ice forming. A light to moderate easterly wind will blow, shifting to southwesterly over the weekend and becoming gustier in coastal areas.
Over the weekend and at the beginning of next week, air temperatures will once again be below zero throughout the country, and at night in some places the temperature may drop to -15°C or lower.
