Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqaei said the European Union’s indifference and acceptance of the US and Israeli aggression, brutality and inhumane actions cannot be perceived as anything other than complicity, writes Politico.
In a post on the X platform, Baqaei wrote that the world is watching. As proof of his statement, Baqaei shared a video of a speech by Belgian left-wing politician Marc Boateng to the European Parliament. In it, the politician said that the majority do not condemn, and even support, the military action launched by US President Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu in Iran: “Your bombs never brought democracy and never will.” Boateng did not respond to a request for comment on his statements.
EU leaders have taken different positions on the conflict in the Middle East.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that no tears should be shed for the Iranian regime, while EU Council President Antonio Costa warned that Trump and Netanyahu’s actions risked further instability in the Middle East.
Spain has been the most vocal critic of the Iran war in Europe, putting it at odds with Germany, France and Britain.
Baqaei’s comments came hours after the speaker of Iran’s parliament warned that attacks on Iranian islands could undermine any restraint, leaving Trump with the blood of American soldiers on his hands.
