An active series of cyclones will dominate Latvia’s weather this week, bringing frequent cloud cover, heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
At the beginning of the week, the centre of a cyclone will move close to Latvia, bringing prolonged and heavy rain to many parts of the country. Some areas are expected to experience very heavy rainfall, while isolated thunderstorms are also forecast.
Winds will become increasingly gusty, with gusts reaching 20–21 metres per second along the Kurzeme coast. Strong wind gusts may also develop locally beneath thunderstorm clouds. Although rainy conditions will persist through much of the week, winds are expected to gradually ease. Compared with last week, temperatures will also be noticeably lower, with daytime highs generally ranging between +16°C and +21°C.
On Monday, July 20, isolated showers are expected overnight in northern Latvia, but by daytime prolonged and heavy rain will spread across much of the country. The heaviest rainfall is forecast in Kurzeme and northern Vidzeme, where rainfall may become particularly intense. Thunderstorms are also possible. Overnight and during the morning, fog may form in some areas as winds remain light. During the day, moderate to moderately strong northeast and east winds will affect Kurzeme and coastal areas, with gusts reaching 15–18 metres per second, increasing to 20–21 metres per second along the Kurzeme coast.
Night-time temperatures will range between +15°C and +20°C, although parts of Kurzeme could cool to around +10°C.
During the day, temperatures in western Latvia will reach +15°C to +20°C, while eastern regions will remain slightly warmer at +20°C to +24°C.
Cloudy conditions will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, although some sunny breaks are possible. Rain is expected across northern Latvia during the night into Tuesday before spreading to most of the country during the day. Heavy downpours and thunderstorms are possible in some areas, with rain continuing overnight into Wednesday, particularly in eastern Latvia. Wednesday will also remain wet across much of the country.
Strong northeasterly to northerly winds will continue along the coast on Tuesday, with gusts reaching 15–19 metres per second. By Wednesday, winds will gradually weaken and shift to northwesterly and westerly directions. Overnight temperatures will range from +11°C to +16°C, while daytime temperatures will generally remain between +15°C and +20°C.
During the second half of the week, the influence of the cyclone will persist. Cloudy skies and periods of rain are expected across much of Latvia, although precipitation will mostly be light. Westerly winds will be light to moderate, and temperatures are expected to remain similar to those recorded earlier in the week.
