The world’s richest man, American businessman Elon Musk, has expressed support for French far-right leader Marine Le Pen ahead of the upcoming autumn elections, writes Politico.
On the 15th of July, the owner of the X, referring to the poll results that are optimistic for the right-wing forces, wrote that Le Pen is France’s last hope.
Le Pen officially launched her fourth presidential election campaign last week, when an appeals court partially acquitted her. However, the verdict on the embezzlement of European Parliament funds, which Le Pen continues to challenge and is ready to submit to a higher court for consideration, remains in force.
Musk, who also owns Tesla and SpaceX, has regularly spoken out about European political developments on social networks, showing support for right-wing and far-right political groups and candidates. In May, Musk wrote that Rupert Lowe’s Save Britain party was the only one that could save Britain, and the American businessman has also repeatedly shared posts by British far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
When it comes to French politics, Musk was yet to choose a candidate to support.
In 2022, after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Musk said he was honored to have the opportunity to speak with the French leader, and in 2023 he supported Macron’s unpopular decision to raise the retirement age. Le Pen has promised to restore the previous order.
Musk’s relationship with France also has a legal nuance. French police have launched an investigation into the sexual impersonations and anti-Semitic remarks made by the X artificial intelligence chatbot Grok. In February, X’s offices in Paris were raided, and Musk was due to appear before French prosecutors in April, but he failed to appear.
