This year, political parties are focusing more on all sorts of minor issues in the election campaign rather than the “big picture” and “big ideas”, former Latvian President Valdis Zatlers said in an interview with LTV’s Rīta panorāma on Monday.
Zatlers believes that overall there is too little passion in the election contest and that the campaign is proceeding rather lukewarmly, which could leave citizens insufficiently motivated to turn out and vote.
The former president particularly urged voters to decide for themselves who to vote for rather than asking artificial intelligence, warning that if they do so, they will “definitely be fooled”.
In Zatlers’ view, Latvia does not need an “explosion”, but rather continued development. Against this backdrop, he said he has the impression that some politicians are proposing reforms simply for the sake of reform, so they can appear to offer voters something new.
Zatlers does not see any major changes or improvements in the work of the new government led by Andris Kulbergs (United List) compared with the previous government.
