The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) is conducting a search at the Riga Central Market administration building on suspicion of bribery, LETA has learned.
As confirmed to LETA by the company Rīgas nami, KNAB carried out criminal procedural actions at the Riga Central Market on Tuesday.
On Twitter, KNAB stated that the procedural activities are part of a criminal case initiated on the 10th of September, which investigates possible bribery, aiding bribery, giving bribes, and accepting unlawful benefits.
KNAB suspects that officials of the Riga Central Market, together with an employee, may have accepted bribes and unlawful benefits from entrepreneurs in exchange for securing specific trading spots in the market.
Five individuals are involved in the criminal case and have the right to defense.
KNAB continues the investigation and is consolidating the evidence obtained. To avoid disrupting the investigation, the bureau is not providing further comments.
Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs (P) informed LETA that the Chairman of the Board of RÄ«gas nami had briefed him on KNAB’s search at the Central Market. Two individuals involved have been suspended from their positions.
“I have instructed that an immediate audit be carried out to ensure full clarity and transparency in this situation,” Kleinbergs said.
