A new government cannot be formed before the next Saeima elections, and if it were possible, it would have already been done, said Augusts Brigmanis, a Saeima deputy from the ruling coalition party Zaļo un Zemnieku savienība (ZZS), in an interview with LTV’s “Rīta panorāma” on Tuesday.
In Brigmanis’ view, if the government led by Evika Siliņa (New Unity) were to fall, a technical government would operate until the Saeima elections, with the same prime minister and ministers remaining in office. Accordingly, he believes that replacing the government is not currently on the coalition parties’ agenda.
The ZZS politician is convinced that after the elections, the current prime minister and some of the ministers will not remain in power.
At the same time, Brigmanis suggested that ZZS does not rule out the possibility of demanding Siliņa’s resignation, although he did not specify on what grounds and later added that this is not an end in itself for the party.
According to Brigmanis, the so-called timber industry case, for which ZZS is currently facing criticism, amounts to petty retaliation. He argued that the allegedly lost millions for the state are not truly losses and are insignificant compared with the “Rail Baltica” pile in the Daugava River — for which, he claims, Progresīvie are responsible — and the high construction costs at the Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital, for which Jaunā Vienotība bears responsibility.
Brigmanis stated that if a ZZS minister were dismissed, the party might “pick the cherries” in government — meaning it could demand the resignation of other ministers in response.
He also acknowledged that ZZS’s participation in the current government is “partly” a political calculation.
