British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned that as the US and Israel’s conflict with Iran rages in the Middle East, the world must not forget that Ukraine is still at war, writes Politico.
Starmer hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in London on the 17th of March, and promised that Britain’s resolve is unbreakable.
Zelensky addressed the British parliament and called for more pressure on Russia. He also stressed that Ukraine is currently the leading producer of drones in the world and is able to offer technology for the defense of Western countries.
The Ukrainian president’s visit to London comes at a time when events in the Middle East have raised concerns among Ukrainians that US President Donald Trump’s allies will be distracted from Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. Speaking in parliament, Zelensky sought to draw parallels between Iran and Russia, describing the two regimes as “brothers in hatred.” He said
aggressors do not end wars because they want to – they stop fighting when it is no longer possible.
Zelensky warned that if evil wins, war will spread everywhere and no ocean, desert or mountain will be a sufficient barrier.
Starmer told Zelensky on the 17th of March that it was important to make it clear that the focus was still on Ukraine. The Briton added that a wider conflict had broken out in the Middle East, but that this should not distract attention from Ukraine’s struggle and the support it needs; at the same time, Russia should not benefit from the war in Iran, from rising oil prices or from the lifting of sanctions.
