A Riga City Court has sentenced an electrician to five years and six months in prison for spying on behalf of Russia’s military intelligence agency (GRU). The court also imposed one year and eight months of probation supervision following his release, without confiscation of property, the LETA news agency has learned.
According to the prosecution, between 2016 and 2025, the man voluntarily cooperated with the GRU for ideological reasons. Acting on its instructions, he illegally collected and directly passed intelligence to Russian military intelligence regarding Spilve Airfield, the conditions for purchasing prepaid mobile phone SIM cards in Latvia, military and political developments in the country, assistance to Ukraine, NATO activities, and other defence-related matters, the prosecution told LETA.
The prosecution stated that these actions endangered Latvia’s national security interests, including the country’s internal security and defence capabilities.
The individual who directed the espionage operation has been identified, and a separate criminal investigation has been launched against that person.
As previously reported, the State Security Service (VDD), in cooperation with the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD), arrested the suspect during the night of 18 October 2025. He has remained in custody as a preventive measure.
