Latvian State Police have received reports of cases in which fraudsters have attempted to scam money from relatives of Latvians reported missing in Nepal, the State Police said.
The fraudsters have invited relatives to meet in person and promised to provide assistance and various forms of “latest” information about identifying and locating missing persons, including offering the services of clairvoyants.
The police stressed that communication and practical assistance provided to relatives by state and municipal authorities in this situation is direct and does not involve intermediaries, and no payment is ever requested for such assistance.
To obtain accurate, reliable and up-to-date information, law enforcement authorities are urging people to follow announcements issued by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Anyone who receives such offers of paid assistance is urged to report them to the State Police.
As previously reported, on 26 August, the collapse of a glacier triggered a flow of ice debris, causing water and mud to surge from a glacial lake and resulting in widespread destruction in Nepal and China. By the morning of 31 August, at least 900 people were known to have died in the natural disaster, while around 4,200 remained missing.
A large group of Latvian tourists organised by yoga enthusiasts from “Yantra” was also near the epicentre of the disaster, while a smaller number of Latvian tourists were in the disaster zone as part of a group organised by the local company “Mighty Himalayan Trek”.
According to information available to the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, three Latvian residents who were in the region at the time were not injured in the flood-triggered mudslide in Nepal, while 33 people are currently considered missing.
