Former EU High Representative Josep Borrell has criticized the European Commission and the Council of Europe for their inaction over the crimes committed by US mercenaries in Gaza, Politico reports.
Borrell wrote in a post on the microblogging platform “X” that in just one month, US mercenaries have killed 550 Palestinians who gathered at food distribution points, but neither the EC nor the Council has responded to these crimes.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GFH) is a US- and Israeli-backed food aid organization that has been criticized for killing civilians seeking aid. According to the Gaza government press center, at least 549 people have been killed and around four thousand injured since the GFH began operations on the 27th of May.
The four GFH aid centers are secured by Israeli forces and US contractors, mostly mercenaries.
The mercenaries are reported to be using live ammunition and stun grenades against Palestinians.
GFH began operating in Gaza after Israel eased its three-month blockade, and since then, civilian deaths have been reported almost daily.
Swiss authorities ordered the closure of the GFH branch in Geneva on July 2. Israel, meanwhile, denies that its soldiers are deliberately killing aid seekers and says its food distribution system is working. It has distributed more than 52 million meals in five weeks.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, initially took a more pragmatic stance than her predecessor, Borrell, a well-known critic of Israel. However, since Israel began blocking aid to Gaza’s civilians, Kallas has become more harsh, stating on the 18th of June that “enough is enough”.
The EU has recently identified human rights violations by Israel and has decided to review the terms of cooperation with the Middle Eastern country.
