Israel said it had carried out strikes on three ports and a power plant in parts of Yemen controlled by Houthi rebels, the BBC reported.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the Galaxy Leader, a commercial vessel that had been patrolling international waters until it was seized by the rebels in 2023, was among the targets. After that, Houthis fired two missiles at Israel, the Israeli military said. A spokesman for the Houthi military junta said its air defenses had responded to the Israeli attack with a large number of locally produced surface-to-air missiles. The Houthis are backed by Iran.
Katz said the strikes were part of Operation Black Flag and warned that the Houthis would continue to pay a high price for their actions. The Israeli defense minister wrote on “X”: “The fate of Yemen is the same as the fate of Tehran. Anyone who tries to harm Israel will be harmed, and
anyone who raises a hand against Israel will have their hand cut off.”
Since the start of the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, the Iranian-backed Houthis have regularly fired missiles at Israel to show solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. There have also been attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Israel has said that the strikes on Yemeni ports are a response to the Houthi attacks. The ports are used to deliver weapons from Iran and attack Israel and its allies.
Israel also shelled the port of Hudaydah, a major transit point for food and humanitarian aid in Yemen, in May and June.
