Qatari’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman said that despite regular violations of the ceasefire, his country is doing everything it can to maintain the fragile ceasefire, writes Politico.
Bin Abdulrahman, who also serves as Qatar’s foreign minister, told CNN that violations occur daily, and Qatar records each of them. However, close cooperation is being established with the United States and Egypt to ensure that the ceasefire continues. Qatar, along with US President Donald Trump, played a major role in achieving the ceasefire, and is trying to end the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.
The Qatari leader noted that as far as international peacekeeping forces in the war zone are concerned, there must be a clear mandate. He added that the role of international forces should be such that neither the Palestinians nor the Israelis pose a threat to each other. The politician said that his
small country has taken on conflict resolution as its role in international relations.
“From our perspective, each country in the international community needs to contribute something to the international community. We found ourselves that we are able to convene between conflicted parties and understand the grievances,” said the Qatari prime minister. Qatar, which is almost six times smaller in size than the territory of Latvia, is trying to solve problems in conflicts step by step.
However, Qatar has received criticism not only for its ties with Hamas, but also with Iran, which is another hot spot in the Middle East and an outcast on the world political stage. The Qatari politician deflected the criticism and said that Iran is Qatar’s neighbor, with which it shares the largest natural gas reserves in the world. “And we would like to see Iran flourishing and developing and prospering and, of course, we don’t want to see an arms race in our region. We don’t want to see a nuclear race in our region. That’s why we’ve been supporting diplomacy all the time,” the politician said.
The Qatari leader rejected the idea that the Trump administration was providing security guarantees to Qatar for gifts. He stressed that these were two different issues. Regarding the plane that Qatar gifted to the United States, which now serves as Trump’s official means of transportation, the politician said that the United States is an ally of Qatar and the gift simply happened. It was an agreement between governments, which is exactly what happens between many other governments.
