Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on the 5th of March that Ukraine was ready to provide support in the fight against Iranian drones that threaten targets in the Middle East, Reuters reports.
After the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on the 28th of February, Iran responded by attacking American targets in neighboring countries in the Middle East, including using hundreds of drones.
In the four-year-long Russian campaign of aggression, Ukraine has developed highly effective ways to shoot down Iranian-made Shaded drones, which Moscow uses extensively in war.
Zelensky wrote on the X that Ukraine had received a request from the United States for specific support to combat Iranian-launched Shaded attacks in the Middle East. The Ukrainian president has reportedly ordered the necessary support and the presence of Ukrainian specialists to help ensure the quality of protection.
The Ukrainians will begin work in the coming days.
In a telephone interview with Reuters, Zelensky said that US President Donald Trump had indicated that he was ready to accept help from any country.
Earlier this week, Zelensky expressed concern that a war in Iran, if prolonged and intense, could reduce arms support for Ukraine from Western allies, especially air defense systems that Kiev needs to protect itself against Russian missiles. In recent months, Ukraine has already felt the inadequacy of the US-made Patriot air defense system, the only effective weapon in the Ukrainian arsenal capable of shooting down Russian-launched ballistic missiles. On the 3rd of March, the Ukrainian president said that Kiev was ready to offer its interceptor drones in exchange for air defense systems from the Middle East – countries in the region have their own Patriot stocks.
